Have you ever really asked yourself that question? Wealth is different things to different people - to some it's about financial resources and money, and to others it's time, health, happiness, freedom, art and beauty, quality of life, and looking after the wealth of our precious planet. Wealth in BuddhismAccording to the Buddha, giving leads to being reborn in happy states and material wealth. Alternatively, lack of giving leads to unhappy states and poverty. The exquisite paradox in Buddhism is that the more we give - and the more we give without seeking something in return - the more wealthy (in the broadest sense of the word) we will become. Wealth as time Have you ever heard of the saying ‘time is money’? Yes? Have you stopped to think of what it really means? Time is like money it is essentially a resource. Time is like money in that they can both be ‘spent’. Money gets spent on shopping for unnecessary ‘must have’ consumer items, and time gets spent sitting unengaged and motionless in front of the television. Time is like money in that they can both be ‘invested’. Money gets invested in stocks or property, time gets invested in important relationships, or in your education or health. Both these investments of time and money will grow and appreciate in value with each investment you make. There is one fundamental difference. Time, unlike money, cannot be ‘saved’. Once a moment has passed, it has gone forever. Time is the definitive scarce resource – use it wisely.
